The Harvest Ran From December to May, Which Is the Whole Idea

A long picking window is not a smaller harvest. It is a harvest that arrives when the household needs it.

Land size does not tell you what a farm produces.

Arpana’s tomato trial took up two biswa, fed her family through the season and returned cash as well. She prepared the Abhilash nursery on 2 August 2025, transplanted on 9 September, recorded the first picking on 11 December and kept harvesting until 5 May 2026.

Three hundred kilograms in total. Costs of ₹200 for seed, ₹200 land rent, ₹1,000 land preparation, ₹500 irrigation and ₹200 labour, with organic inputs. Income ₹12,000, net return ₹10,300.

Her reflection adds the part the figures miss. The household ate from the crop through the season and she still reported around ₹10,000 of benefit. A crop is worth what is sold plus what is eaten, and those two should be counted separately rather than folded into one income number.

What changed was her practical sense of what a very small plot can do. The long picking window spread the harvest instead of concentrating it on one day - which supports regular household use and repeated small sales, though the marketing pattern is not yet recorded.

As a member of the Ujala Aajeevika Adhikar Sangathan, her plot becomes a place other women considering intensive vegetables on small land can come and look at.

DEHAT facilitated the technical learning, the collective exchange and the discipline of recording. Arpana made the decisions and carried the crop through nursery, transplanting and successive picking across nine months.
