When every option is bad, the useful thing is not encouragement. It is a wider list.
When Bindu’s husband died she became responsible for four young children with no stable income. What followed was a run of insecure earning: daily wage work, labour on other people’s farms, and for a period selling alcohol. She disliked the work and could not see an alternative that still put food in front of her children and kept them in school.
Word of a local Aajeevika Adhikar Sangathan offered a way out of isolation. She began attending with the women of the Ghazni AAS. The meetings promised no livelihood. They created a place where women compared experience, understood financial choices and examined what work was actually possible nearby. DEHAT facilitated the learning and the livelihood information. Bindu decided what she was prepared to change.
Talking with other women, she considered farming, animal rearing and small enterprise. She stopped selling alcohol and began cultivating vegetables and food grains. The beginning was hard, and both income and confidence improved gradually.
The transition is the achievement, with or without figures attached: she replaced work she experienced as harmful with work she could exercise control over.
Her stated priority was never empowerment in the abstract. It was feeding four children and protecting their schooling. As cultivation became established, she was able to keep them in education.
She did not stop at her own household. Bindu began talking to other women about the choices she had made and the learning the collective offered. That peer role is what keeps a story like this from being read as exceptional. Told as an individual triumph it is inspiring and useless. Inside a collective it becomes knowledge another woman can question, adapt and test.

The Alternative Has to Be Real
A women’s collective, livelihood information and enough seed and confidence to get through a first difficult season. That is what makes refusing bad work possible rather than principled.
