One opening, used well, tends to produce the next one.
Rama Devi married young and without formal education. She contributed labour and income inside a joint family and was later forced out amid a dispute over ancestral property. With few resources of her own, she needed both earnings and a route back into public life.
Community facilitators encouraged her to apply for selection as an Accredited Social Health Activist. She applied and was selected. The distinction matters: DEHAT neither appointed her nor created the role. What was made accessible was information and encouragement. She navigated the process and did the work.
Working on women’s and children’s health gave her an income and, just as importantly, a reason to move. She could leave the household, meet other women and hear concerns that rarely reached a public conversation. Rama and other women then formed what she describes as the first self-help group in their area. Through group savings and credit she opened a village general store and earned enough to manage household expenses more securely.
The store was one outcome. The collective capacity around it was the other. Her experience showed neighbouring women that a group could be more than a savings mechanism - it could weigh livelihood options, absorb a period of financial stress, and give members a way to talk about exploitation. Rajumari Maurya later formed another group after watching Rama’s. That second group combined literacy, loans and a collective claim about public food distribution, which is what it looks like when learning travels between women instead of staying with one model beneficiary.
Rama also took part in Tarakshar literacy learning, represented her district at a Mahila Sadan associated with the Aaroh programme and took part in local public forums. Her own measure of change was domestic: children eating properly and going to school.
Several modest openings reinforced each other. Information enabled an application. The role increased mobility and confidence. Relationships became a group. Group finance became a shop. Literacy and wider forums strengthened public participation.
Learning travelled between women instead of staying with one model beneficiary.
Make the Opening Reachable
Someone who knows a public post is being filled, and who tells the woman least likely to hear about it. That is the whole intervention at the start of this story.
