What Can Be Grown Without Risking Cash Before the Harvest?

For a small farmer the important figure is not the return. It is the amount that has to be spent in advance.

No fertiliser. No pesticide. Very little water.

Resilience is shaped by what a household must risk before it knows anything.

Basamati’s trial started from the question every smallholder actually asks: what can be grown with limited purchased inputs and modest irrigation that still returns something useful?

She chose a local lentil variety, sowed on 20 October 2025 and harvested on 2 April 2026. Two quintals. Costs of ₹200 for seed, ₹200 for land preparation, ₹500 for irrigation and ₹500 for labour, with land rent at ₹1,000. Total ₹3,400 against income of ₹12,000, for a net return of ₹8,600.

Her own observation is the useful part. Lentil is among the better options where expenditure is low, chemical fertiliser is not needed and irrigation demand is limited. She also associates the crop with improving the soil.

Both of those matter in a climate-stressed system. Resilience is not only gross income. It is the cash a household has to put at risk before harvest, and the demand a crop places on water and soil.

What is documented here is a completed local trial, not proof that one crop resolves livelihood insecurity. She generated experience on her own land and can now compare lentil against the other winter options.

As a member of the Pratima Aajeevika Adhikar Sangathan, that comparison enters a collective conversation about seed, water, soil and seasonal risk rather than staying in one household.

The follow-up worth having is about germination, moisture, how much was eaten, how much sold, how much kept as seed - and whether any neighbour changed their plan after seeing the plot.

Resilience is shaped by what a household must risk before it knows anything.

Pulse seed, a season of technical discussion and an honest field record. The whole point of the crop is that it does not need more.
